“Mammy” Sikes Hotel

Add to plan Remove from plan

(c.1850)
The hotel quickly grew from a small log structure to a frame house with a columned porch and a white picket fence. Proprietress “Mammy” Sikes was praised for her hospitality and culinary skills by satisfied guests which included prominent Texas politicians, troupes of minstrel players, drummers (traveling salesmen), and actors playing at the Haynes Opera House. Subsequent names for the hotel include the Thompson Hotel and Montfort Hotel. This landmark was destroyed by fire in 1948.
